You all should just do away with rating comments. I mean really, what's the fucking point?

New rating system for adequacy
Dear My Diary,

I've said for a long time that ratings don't matter on kuro5hin, and I can't remember the last time I rated a comment. But here, they're even more useless. Not only are there fewer users, at least for the moment, but there are no in between ratings given out.

Also, with the number of educated editors here, you don't need help from users to rate down "trolls" or "spam", you just delete them. I guess it doesn't really matter, because I don't rate and I read comments no matter what they are rated, and the people that want to rate comments will continue to do so for whatever reason. It's just annoying to see comments of people who are expressing honest opinions and those that aren't quite as sincere getting uneven treatment. Oh, well. This site is for you, anyhow, so I'll just shut up now.

In fact, the sole reason I ever post anything is for the 5 ratings. The more the better. The more respectable the rater, the better. I'm constantly hearing how ratings mean nothing, but who am I hearing it from? Typically, some 'counterculture' type who thinks everyone should 'drop out' and I guess go live on some kind of commune with no clothes or heated water or anything. Hey, if that's what you want, fine, but I won't be following your naked butt into the woods.

Sure, ratings are just symbols of Western materialism and the rest of it, but so what? If I didn't have my comment ratings, how would I know who I was better than? How would I know who was winning the arguments? How would I know who is right?

Scoff if you must, but I'm proud of my achievements in garnering what I consider to be one of the finest records of commenting anywhere. Right now, I just keep my ratings in a special book on my bedstand, but soon I will finish building my display case for the living room, where my complete rating history will be presented in a fine maple wood and velvet-lined cabinet, under glass.

Funny? Sure, you can laugh. But my comment ratings make me somebody and I know it, and nothing you say can change that!

You feel that "it doesn't really matter, because [you] don't rate and [you] read comments no matter what they are rated."

But even though it doesn't affect you in any scientifically measurable way, you still feel that you should tell the rest of us how to live our lives.

I don't think you even bothered to ask yourself how much work turning off moderation would involve. I can only imagine that turning it off would entail many many hours of work. And that's an optomistic estimate.

Sure, I am not one of you "coders" or "hackers". I may not know how many grueling hours of work it would take to turn the ratings off, but isn't that what these so-called "elite" techies pride themselves on? I mean, if you haven't taken a crappy piece of free software and spent hours, days, or even years bending it to your will so that it works almost as well as an off the shelf product and performs the task -- or even multiple tasks -- you desire, you haven't done anything worthwhile in this leet world, have you?

So quit complaining about me wanting ratings turned off. I bet this is exactly the kind of thing the maintainers of beautiful sites like adequacy want to hear. It's a challenge, so they should get to it. In fact, let me know when the ratings are turned off so I can ask for a new rating system once they're done. Believe me, everyone will thank me later.

Either that, or just set the default comment preferences for "rate comments" to "no" and don't let users change it.

There are no techies in the editorial staff at this site. DMG is the closest thing we have, (He's an expert VB programmer and an MCSE if I remember correctly) and he's tolerated because the editorial perspective it gives him on other issues.

Given that fact, even if we decided to turn off ratings it would never get done. No one here knows how to do it. Rusty even set up our site for us, and did the web design.

If you want techies, there's plenty of other places you can go and watch them write about art and whine about anti-hacking laws.

You know, you are right. What for do we need ratings? Just like money, just a measure of how much something might be worth? My comment is worth to me just as much as yours is worth to you, and then it might not be so.

...each person should only be allowed to rate their own comments, to show how much of worth it is to them. Then we would all know where it stands and how high the importance of that comment actually is!

So I call upon the editors of adequacy, to withhold rating-rights for everyone but the person who wrote the very comment/diary/story.

A call to the power of the individual!

how about I rate everything at random? would that appease you?

instead, I've decided to be more critical in my rating of comments, and have included more scrutiny when assigning the coveted 5 rating. Indeed, you will see I'm using far more 3's and 4's now. I'm not so sure about 2's, though.

...if they extended into the negative range. Too often I see an incredibly lame post which is just screaming out for a -5 or some such. Scoop's 1-5 rating system is inherently flawed in that all ratings psychologically present a positive value; a scale from -5 to 5 would make positive-rated comments stand out more, but they would also need to be of higher quality to maintain that positive rating, since a 5.00/1 rated comment could be shot back down to 0 with a single -5 rating.
