I was sure all of your posts contain a time traveling reference.

for a comment about the Trek 5900 (see poll). I love my 5200, but I wish I could afford one of these bad boys.

Oh well - when you're 10 lbs over racing weight, a pound and a half on the bike doesn't make much difference :-/

So what's your poison bikewise, Mr. Doofus?

Trek used to be impressive, but today they're nothing but a vanity brand. Nowadays, you can get just as much bike for 2/3 the cost from a more market savvy outfit like Univega.

But that's all consumer-grade stuff. If you want performance and fit, there's no reason today to go with anything other than custom-built, from the frame on up. If you know where to go, you can get great hardware for under 6k, easily. Don't let the trade rags fool you.

Don't get me started, son. (none / 0) (#8)

Univega isn't sold in the US anymore. They were just rebadged Raleighs anyway. Sure, you can go custom, but if you're average build you can get a good fit from most production bikes with maybe just a stem changeout. You know anyone who makes custom-fit carbon fiber frames? I sure don't.

I bought the Trek in January 1999. At that time Lance was a washed up racer with platinum traces still burning in his veins, who'd never amount to anything ever again on the bike. Brand cachet certainly wasn't a factor. I bought it because when I got up out of the saddle and sprinted, there was no frame windup. When I threw it into a corner, it tracked exactly as I expected. When I rode over rough pavement, it muted the bumps. And - bonus - it fit perfectly with no component changeouts. To cap it all, $2500 for a monocoque carbon fiber frame, Rolf wheels (say what you want, but 3+ years later and they still roll true) and Ultegra 9 speed was a pretty good deal.

But enough of this. Time to go ride. Those 10 lbs aren't going to come off all by themselves.
